Who we are and what we hope.

At Lyceum Academy, our mission is to foster a lifelong love of learning by discovering truth through direct experience, experimentation, and questions rather than conforming to preconceived ideals. Drawing from the timeless legacies of Aristotle, Franklin, Hawkings and the like, we commit ourselves to providing an unparalleled education tailored to our son's unique interests and needs.

We ensure a solid grounding in the fundamentals—mathematics, science, literature, history, language, and culture—while carving out time for immersive explorations in topics that spark his deepest curiosity. As a polymath with professional backgrounds in aviation, software development, and veterinary medicine among other interests and an educational and research background in biology and cultural anthropology, I bring a never-ending curiosity to our approach, emphasizing evidence-based discovery as the path to discovering deeper truths. My wife's background in marine biology, prior work with NOAA, and remarkable skill as a small animal veterinarian helps keep our family grounded when our plans exceed the most limited resource of all: time.

 

Though we hold traditional family values—we guide our son with an open heart, offering a broad spectrum of religious and spiritual insights so he may forge his own path. My own path has led me to both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism, has guided me at one time to life time among the monastics of a Virginia Ashram and at others to the Christian and Bahá'í faiths. At each step, being gifted with the insight of the most beautiful teachers and guides.

Our path of homeschooling is not without sacrifice and not for everyone. Its demands are high but we see it as the greatest investment in the future. By learning alongside our son—often rediscovering the innate wisdom of youth, like the art of presence and play—we aim to equip him not just with knowledge, but with the resilience, empathy, and adventurous spirit to thrive. We believe every child deserves an education as unique as they are, and we're here to inspire and collaborate with families who share a similar vision of active parenting and learning.
